SGD Fire Protection Ltd were appointed by CM Oxendale, acting on behalf of Your Housing Group, to undertake the installation of new passive fire protection measures at the new Wigan Foyer development.

The project replaces the existing Foyer facility in Coops and comprises a three-storey complex accommodating 38 self-contained apartments alongside ancillary spaces, including teaching and studio areas, meeting rooms, breakout zones, a laundry facility, residents lounge, gymnasium, and a training kitchen.

Project Objectives & Execution

In accordance with the project specification and fire strategy design, SGD Fire Protection implemented a range of Quelfire and Mulcol passive fire protection systems. These products were selected due to their third party certification, proven fire resistance performance, and compliance with BS 476 and EN 1366 testing standards.

The Quelfire and Mulcol systems were applied to maintain the required fire compartmentation throughout the building envelope, particularly around service penetrations, linear joints, and voids.

Their use ensures that all fire stopping details achieve the specified fire resistance ratings, preventing premature failure of compartment lines in the event of a fire. By maintaining the integrity and insulation of fire rated walls and floors, these systems play a critical role in restricting the spread of fire and smoke, enabling safe evacuation and facilitating firefighting access.

The works were completed in full compliance with the projects fire strategy, manufacturer installation guidelines, and relevant building regulations, ensuring long term safety and performance for the end users.
